Indonesian-Surinamese Partnership Strengthens Family Health Through International Community Service Program
In a landmark international collaboration, a team of Indonesian academics and health professionals has launched a community service program (PKM) in Suriname focused on strengthening family health. This initiative, which took place in Lelydorp, Wanaica, Suriname, brought together local health institutions, community leaders, and volunteers in a shared effort to improve the well-being of families through education, prevention, and access to basic health services.
The program, themed “Strengthening Family Health for a Better Future,” included a variety of activities such as health workshops and training sessions for family. Emphasis was placed on promoting preventive care and empowering families with the knowledge to manage common health issues at home.
This collaboration is especially significant given the historical and cultural ties between Indonesia and Suriname. Many Surinamese citizens are of Javanese descent, creating a unique opportunity for cultural reconnection and mutual development. This activity was filled by :
1. Dr.Sugiyanto, Poltekkes Kemenkes Semarang (GERMAS: Indonesia’s Preventive Strategy against NCDs)
2. Dr. Rachmi Misbah, et al., Poltekkes Kemenkes Kendari (Teen Resilience Toolkit: Smart Social Choices + Body Health)
3. Satya Darmayani, et al., Poltekkes Kemenkes Kendari (SuperMom Strategy: Food Wisdom & Quick Health Checks)
4. Ratri Ciptaningtyas, UIN Syarif Hidayullah Jakarta (Red Alert: Tackling Anemia in Teen Girls with Smart Strategies)
5. Siti Nurhayati, Unsoed Purwokerto (the management of integrated waste management at the House hold scale).
According to Dr. Ari Setiawan (chairman CeL KODELN), the program coordinator, the PKM aims to create sustainable health improvements by building local capacity. “We are not just delivering services temporarily; we are investing in people’s knowledge and strengthening the local health ecosystem,” she said during the closing ceremony.
The success of this program has opened doors for future collaborations between Indonesia and Suriname in the health and education sectors. Both governments have expressed support for continuing joint initiatives that promote health, cultural exchange, and community resilience. (ars, kodeln team)
